Symptoms:

  • Breaker is tripping.

Troubleshooting Steps:

  1. Verify the neutral wire from the load is connected directly to the breaker.

  2. Is breaker connected to a dryer?

    1. If yes, is dryer a 3 wire or 4 wire circuit? Note that some 3 wire circuit dryers may not be compatible with an AFCI breaker.

Neutral-Ground Loop:

  1. For Solar Interconnection (Combiner Box or Sub-panel)

    1. Check: Open the solar combiner box or the dedicated solar sub-panel where the inverters/Branch circuits are landed.

    2. Action: Ensure the neutral bar and ground bar are completely isolated from one another.

    3. Correction: Remove any bonding jumpers or green screws connecting the neutral bus to the enclosure or ground bus.

  2. HVAC Systems (AC Unit Disconnect)

    1. Check: Inspect the outdoor AC disconnect box.

    2. Action: Verify that the neutral wire (if present) is not bonded to the ground wire or the metal chassis of the disconnect.

    3. Correction: Isolate the ground and neutral.

  3. Individual Appliances & Receptacles

    1. Check: If a specific appliance circuit is tripping, open the receptacle box for that appliance.

    2. Action: Inspect the wiring to ensure the bare copper (ground) and white (neutral) wires are not touching and are not connected to the same terminal.

    3. Correction: Ensure only the ground wire is bonded to the metal box or the green grounding screw on the outlet.
